MARGARET RIVER, Western Australia (Domenica 13 Aprile 2014): In una Finale thrilling in Western Australia Michel Bourez è stato incoronato Campione del Drug Aware Margaret River Pro, seconda tappa del 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour (WCT). Il potente tahitiano si è assicurato la su prima vittoria di sempre nel WCT battendo Josh Kerr in un eccitante finale di una super Domenica. Precentemente Bourez aveva eliminato l’11 volte ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) nelle Semifinali e Nat Young (USA) nei Quarti. La vittoria lo ha catapultato al 4° posto nella classifica mondiale ASP.
Sia Bourez che Kerr sono entrati in acqua nella Finale alla ricerca della prima vittoria in carriera dell’ASP WCT. La partenza è stata lenta, ma Bourez con due onde consecutive si è assicurato un 6.33 e 7.57 con il suo potente forehand brevettato. Kerr gli ha risposto di conseguenza, offrendo un vero e proprio attacco nelle destre di Main break, ma Bourez ha continuato il suo momento di formacon un 8.33 che gli ha assicurato la vittoria del Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. Kerr si è classificato secondo per il secondo anno consecutivo.
L’11-volte ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) è stato battuto dal vincitore dell’evento Bourez alle Semifinali. Slater ha dominato fin dall’inizio,mostrando una marea di carvate mentre Bourez ha faticato a trovare il ritmo. Nei minuti finali però, il tahitiano è riuscito ha preso una destra che gli ha permesso di ottenere un mostruoso 9.37, il punteggio più alto di giornata sulla singola onda. Slater ha lasciato l’evento in terza posizione e già si concentra per il Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. Slater precedentemente aveva battuto Joel Parkinson nei Quarti in quella che è stata definita la battaglia dei colossi.
Bede Durbidge (AUS) è stato battuto dall’amico Australiano Josh Kerr in una lotta altalenante e si è assicuratola terza posizione, suo miglior risultato dal 2011. Kerr è partito al comando fin dall’inizio, con un 5.50 e 8.83,col suo marchio di fabbricanelle destre di Main Break. Durbidge ha cercato di rifarsi sotto nella heat con 2 bei punteggi, 7.07 e 7.80 ma nonè stato abbastanza per poter vincere. Quando mancavano pochi minuti , Kerr è ritornato avanti con un 6.67 che lo ha portato in finale.
La prossima tappa del 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour sarà il Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach dal 16 al 27 Aprile 2014.
A thrilling Finals day in Western Australia saw Michel Bourez (PYF) crowned winner of the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro, the second stop on the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour (WCT). The Tahitian powerhouse secured his first ever WCT win by defeating Josh Kerr (AUS) in an exciting Final on super Sunday. Bourez previously dispatched 11-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) in the Semifinals and Nat Young (USA) in the Quarterfinals. The victory places Bourez at No. 4 in the ASP World Rankings.
Both Bourez and Kerr took to the water in the Final searching for their first career ASP WCT wins. The bout got off to a slow start, but Bourez eventually lit up two consecutive waves scoring 6.33 and 7.57 with his patented forehand power. Kerr answered back, delivering a full fledged attack on the Main Break rights, but Bourez continued to build momentum, adding an 8.33 to his score line to secure victory at the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. Kerr finishes as runner up for the second year in a row.

Slater dominated from the outset, blending a variety of impressive turns on a number of waves while Bourez struggled to find a rhythm. In the dying minutes however, the momentum changed and the Tahitian lit up a righthander with Herculean power for a 9.37, the day’s highest single-wave score and the win. Slater leaves the event in equal third and sets his sights on the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. Slater previously defeated Joel Parkinson in the Quarterfinals in what proved to be a battle of the juggernauts.
Bede Durbidge (AUS) was defeated in an engaging seesaw battle against fellow Australian Josh Kerr and secured a third-place finish, his best result since 2011. Kerr took an early lead, logging a 5.50 and 8.83, for his signature forehand panache on the Main Break rights. Durbidge managed to fight his way back in to the heat compliments of his powerful approach, detonating a 7.07 and 7.80 of his own but it wasn’t enough. With just minutes remaining on the clock, Kerr came back with a 6.67 and took the win.
