English Version
In spite of all predictions the Italian Leonardo Fioravanti (16 years old) beat the strong Australian Matt Banting (20) and defending champion and No. 1 favorite to win the Australian Pro Junior 2014.
In the opening moments, both surfers have paddled for the same wave and no one wanted to back out. They clashed and judges have called a double interference, which means that both surfers had one of their best waves halved. Then, during mid heat of both surfers paddled again for the same wave – but very wisely surfed in opposite directions. One left and one right. Once the judges scores were released in the computer average for each result was the same, 8.83 but the second wave was better than Leo, who in the last minute he could not get to climb over the Australian.
The second semi saw Jacob Willcox from Margaret River get the better of Byron Bay’s Soli Bailey. Soli had the best individual wave of the clash – continuing his incredible form of the earlier rounds, but on two waves, Jacob was too strong. The heat wrapped up in similar fashion to semi 1, with both surfers involved in a cat ’n mouse chase up the beach with Jacob stopping Soli from getting the score he needed.
So, ladies and gentleman, congrats to our boys junior finalists Jacob Willcox and Leo Fioravanti. They will do battle for the title on Thursday after midday Thursday in Australia (2.00 in Italy).
