This wave, this moment and these 2 surfers in particular have redefined Big Wave Surfing in so many ways. Back in 2016, few days after the first edition of the WSL Big Wave Tour event in Nazaré (Nazaré Challenge), professional surfers Lucas Chumbo and Francisco Porcella, both charged into this bomb, full committed they ended up in a major wipeout.
After this day that we all called “The Heavy Thursday”, the dynamics of paddling in Nazaré have totally changed, boundaries were broken. As for Lucas Chumbo, he was nominated for WSL Biggest Paddle Award with this wave (didn’t won) but won the WSL Performance Award the next Year and the second edition of the WSL Nazaré Challenge this year, Francisco Porcella won the WSL Biggest Wave Award that same season with a wave caught just a few months later right here in Nazaré during the Big Ugly Swell.
Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous worldwide for huge waves in 2011, when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world-record for the largest wave ever surfed at 78-foot at the time, in 2017 that record was broken by Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa, setting the bar at 80-foot.
